Worth being direct, because most scrap metal websites are not. We are based in South Granville in Sydney. Parkes is roughly 365 kilometres and four and a half hours west. We are not a Parkes yard and we do not pretend to be one.
What we run instead are scheduled collections into the Central West for loads that justify the distance. The 3-tonne minimum and a four-and-a-half-hour haul point the same direction: this service is built for commercial, industrial and rural volume. A logistics operator clearing decommissioned handling equipment, a workshop consolidating years of offcuts and superseded plant, a farm gathering decades of machinery and fencing wire, a contractor stripping out a plant room — those loads work. A trailer of household metal does not, and it is better said here than discovered on the phone.
Where Parkes is unusual is that it can often be combined into a broader Central West run alongside Orange, Dubbo and Forbes, which improves both scheduling and economics. If you can coordinate with a neighbouring business or property, that helps considerably.
Most towns this size do not have a national logistics story. Parkes does, and it bears directly on metal recycling.
The Parkes Special Activation Precinct was the first Special Activation Precinct announced for regional New South Wales. It covers around 4,800 hectares west of the township, and it sits at the only junction of Australia’s two rail spines — the north–south Inland Rail corridor connecting Melbourne to Brisbane, and the east–west Trans-Australian Railway connecting Sydney to Perth. From that junction, suppliers can reach up to 80 per cent of Australia’s population within 12 hours by road or rail. The precinct is projected to support up to 3,000 jobs across a range of industries, and $185 million was committed in 2020 for enabling infrastructure.
The part that matters for this page: the Parkes precinct is designated as NSW’s first dedicated resources and recycling precinct with direct rail access. The explicit proposition put to recyclers is that they can draw feedstock from 80 per cent of the Australian population overnight by rail. In other words, the NSW Government has deliberately positioned Parkes as a place where recovered material is aggregated and processed at scale, rather than merely passing through.
Anchoring the freight side is the National Logistics Hub and Pacific National’s Parkes Logistics Terminal, a $35 million intermodal facility opened in 2019 and located adjacent to Inland Rail. Inland Rail itself has described Parkes as the flagship city on the project.
For anyone holding metal in Parkes today, the practical implication is straightforward: this is a town whose industrial activity is growing rather than contracting, which means construction, fitout, plant turnover and decommissioning — and each of those produces recoverable metal.
Copper is our lead material. In Parkes it comes from several directions: electrical contracting across the Special Activation Precinct and the industrial area, the mining supply chain around Northparkes to the north of town with its pumps, motors, cabling and switchgear, engineering and fabrication workshops servicing agriculture and mining, rural electrical work on pumps, sheds, silos and irrigation, and plumbing across the town’s older housing stock.
We handle bare bright, #1 and #2 copper, insulated cable, copper wire in industrial reels and offcuts, pipe and fittings, and busbar from switchboard work. Grading is done at our facility and itemised on your transaction record, so the settlement figure traces back to what each grade contributed. See our copper scrap and copper wire scrap pages for grading detail.

Alongside copper we recycle bulk ferrous and non-ferrous scrap from Parkes commercial, industrial and rural sites. This is a bulk-only service — we do not purchase small lots or individual items, and loads are assessed as a whole.
Typical Central West collections include farm machinery and implements, fencing wire, silos, sheds and grain handling equipment, irrigation and stock water pipe, decommissioned mining and industrial plant, conveyor and materials handling equipment, structural steel and racking from warehouse and workshop changes, stainless steel from food and grain processing, aluminium sheet and extrusion, brass fittings from plumbing and mechanical work, electric motors and pumps, and mixed metal from demolition and site clear-outs.
Bulk solar panel recycling is an additional service for installers, commercial property owners and rural sites across the Parkes region. Solar panels are classified as e-waste in NSW rather than standard scrap metal, which brings separate handling, storage and transport obligations — and compliant options are considerably thinner in the Central West than in Sydney. The region also carries significant solar generation, including farm-scale and commercial installations now reaching end of life. We collect at 3 tonnes and above. See the solar panel recycling page.
Parkes sits in the Central West of NSW on Wiradjuri Country, roughly 365 kilometres west of Sydney at the junction of the Newell Highway — the main inland route between Melbourne and Brisbane — and the east–west rail corridor. It is the administrative and commercial centre of the Parkes Shire, with a town population of around 11,000 and a shire population near 15,000.
The economy rests on four pillars. Agriculture — broadacre cropping, particularly wheat and canola, plus sheep and cattle grazing across the surrounding shire. Mining — the Northparkes copper and gold operation north of town is one of the region’s largest employers and has seen substantial expansion investment. Freight and logistics — the Special Activation Precinct, National Logistics Hub and Pacific National terminal, built on the town’s rail junction. And manufacturing and services, including food processing and the engineering workshops that support agriculture and mining.
Parkes is also known well beyond its size for the Parkes radio telescope — “the Dish” — operated by CSIRO south of town, and for the annual Parkes Elvis Festival. Neither generates scrap metal in volume, but both explain why a town of 11,000 has the profile it does.
Forbes sits about 33 kilometres south, Peak Hill about 50 kilometres north, Orange around 130 kilometres east and Dubbo roughly 110 kilometres north-east.

Catalytic converters, batteries, car engines and electric motors are accepted within a qualifying bulk load rather than purchased as individual items.
Call 0411 398 285 or submit an enquiry with material types, approximate tonnage and the Parkes site address.
We confirm the load qualifies at 3 tonnes, check access and vehicle requirements, and slot it into a Central West run. You get a realistic window, not an optimistic one.
Our team attends with the appropriate vehicle and lifting equipment, loads the material and leaves the site clear.
The load is weighed and graded at our facility, you receive an itemised transaction record, and funds are transferred to your account on settlement.
Our Central West runs cover Parkes and the surrounding shire, including Peak Hill, Trundle, Tullamore, Bogan Gate, Alectown and the rural areas between, along with Forbes to the south and Condobolin to the west. Where volume justifies it we combine Parkes collections with runs to Orange and Dubbo, and sites along the return leg towards Sydney including Bathurst can often be scheduled on the same trip. The full list is on our service areas page.
If you have volume in a Central West town not listed here, call anyway — the question is tonnage and access, not the name of the town.
Copper Recycle Sydney operates as a registered scrap metal business under the NSW Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016. For anyone selling to us in Parkes that means payment is made by bank transfer rather than cash, we record each transaction along with the seller’s details, and photo identification is required at the point of sale. These obligations apply to every registered dealer in NSW, regional or metropolitan, and exist to keep stolen metal out of the recycling chain.
Instant payment and compliance sit together comfortably. Funds move on settlement the moment your load is weighed and graded, and both sides end up with a record — useful for any farm or business that has its own reporting to do.
Material collected from the Central West is sorted, graded and processed back into manufacturing supply chains. For rural properties in particular, turning decades of accumulated steel and superseded machinery into a single recycled load is a better outcome than a scrap heap behind the shed — for the property, and for material that can be used again.
If you have 3 tonnes or more of copper, scrap metal or solar panels at a Parkes or Central West site, call 0411 398 285 or email info@copperrecyclesydney.com.au. Tell us the material types, rough tonnage, the site address and anything we should know about access.
