Why Wetherill Park is our most straightforward collection area

Three reasons, and they are worth stating plainly because they affect what you actually get.

The volume is already here. Wetherill Park is not a suburb where we hunt for 3-tonne loads — it is a suburb where a single racking removal, plant decommissioning or production clear-out routinely clears the minimum on its own. The estate is built around manufacturing and distribution, and both generate metal as a byproduct of normal operation.

We are 15 kilometres away. Our facility is in South Granville. There is no regional batching, no waiting for enough nearby work to justify a run, and no transport cost quietly absorbed into the rate. Most Wetherill Park collections can be scheduled within a day or two.

We know the estate. Which Victoria Street frontages a semi can turn in, how the loading docks are arranged on the larger Horsley Drive facilities, which sites require inductions or escorted access. That is accumulated knowledge rather than something worked out on arrival with your forklift driver waiting.

Copper recycling in Wetherill Park NSW 2164

Copper recycling in Wetherill Park

Copper is our lead material, and an industrial estate of this scale turns it over continuously. The sources are predictable once you know where to look: electrical contractors stripping out and refitting factory switchboards, cable pulls across tenancy changes, motor rewinds and replacements on production machinery, busbar from distribution board work, and mechanical services trades servicing the plant rooms of large-format warehouses.

We handle bare bright, #1 and #2 copper, insulated cable, copper wire in industrial reels and offcuts, copper pipe and fittings, and busbar. Grading is done at our facility and itemised on your transaction record, so the settlement figure traces back to what each grade actually contributed rather than arriving as a single unexplained number.

For sites running continuous copper volume — and in this estate that is common — we can arrange scheduled collections or bin placement rather than one-off bookings. See our copper scrap and copper wire scrap pages for grading detail.

Bulk scrap metal recycling for Wetherill Park industry

Alongside copper we recycle bulk ferrous and non-ferrous scrap from manufacturing, warehousing and distribution sites across the estate. This is a bulk-only service — we do not purchase small lots or individual items, and loads are assessed as a whole rather than piece by piece.

Typical Wetherill Park collections include production offcuts and manufacturing waste, decommissioned plant and machinery, warehouse racking and shelving from fitouts and relocations, structural steel, stainless steel from food processing and fabrication, aluminium extrusion and sheet from window, door and facade manufacturers, brass fittings and valves from plumbing and mechanical work, electric motors, pumps and conveyor components, and mixed metal from tenancy strip-outs and site clean-outs.

Tenancy churn is worth calling out specifically. An estate this size has a constant cycle of leases ending and beginning, and every changeover strips out racking, cabling, mezzanines, services and fitout steel. If you are a property manager or an outgoing tenant with a make-good obligation, that material is usually well past 3 tonnes.

Solar panel recycling

Bulk solar panel recycling is an additional service for installers, commercial property owners and decommissioning projects. Solar panels are classified as e-waste in NSW rather than standard scrap metal, which brings distinct handling, storage and transport obligations. Warehouse rooftops across the Smithfield–Wetherill Park estate carry a very large installed base of commercial solar, and the earliest of those arrays are now reaching end of life. We collect at 3 tonnes and above. See the solar panel recycling page.

Wetherill Park NSW and the Smithfield–Wetherill Park industrial estate

About Wetherill Park and the Smithfield–Wetherill Park industrial estate

Wetherill Park sits roughly 34 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Fairfield. Its residential population is small — around 6,412 at the 2021 census — but that figure says almost nothing about the suburb, because Wetherill Park is overwhelmingly an industrial place. The Smithfield–Wetherill Park Industrial Estate is widely described as the largest industrial estate in the southern hemisphere, and functions as the centre of manufacturing and distribution for Greater Western Sydney.

The estate’s main thoroughfare is The Horsley Drive, with Victoria Street, Polding Street and Cowpasture Road carrying much of the remaining industrial frontage. The mix runs from small tenancies and engineering workshops through to large-format distribution facilities and purpose-built manufacturing plants. ABC Tissue Products, which manufactures Quilton among other brands, is headquartered in the suburb. A significant cluster of automotive operations sits here too, including Jaguar, BMW, Subaru and Mercedes-Benz facilities. On the retail side, Stockland Wetherill Park, Market Town and Greenway Plaza serve the surrounding area.

Geographically the estate runs continuously into Smithfield to the east, with Horsley Park and Prospect to the north, Pemulwuy and Greystanes beyond, and Bossley Park, Prairiewood and Abbotsbury to the south. Yennora and Fairfield sit to the south-east. For practical purposes the industrial land does not stop at the suburb boundary, and neither do we — a collection on one side of Victoria Street is the same job as one on the other.

Connectivity is what put the estate here and what keeps it working: the M4 to the north, the Cumberland Highway and the Westlink M7 to the west, and road freight access through to Port Botany and the broader Sydney network. For a recycler, the relevant consequence is simple. Manufacturing produces offcut metal. Distribution produces racking and packaging metal. Tenancy churn produces strip-out metal. All three happen here at scale, every week.

How to prepare a load for collection

You do not need to sort or clean anything — we assess mixed loads. A few things reliably improve what a load returns:

Separate copper grades where practical. Bare bright kept apart from insulated cable and #2 copper grades more favourably than the same metal presented mixed. On a factory refit with reels of cable, this is the highest-return hour of labour available to you.

Keep non-metal contamination out. Timber, plastic, pallets, packaging and general waste reduce the assessed weight of a load and can move material into a lower grade.

Stage the load at the dock or roller door apron. Consolidated in one accessible area with clearance for our vehicle. On the larger Horsley Drive facilities, booking the dock makes the difference between a 40-minute job and a two-hour one.

Flag hazards in advance. Refrigerant-charged units, batteries and anything with residual fluids need identifying before we arrive so they are handled correctly.

Tell us about induction and access requirements. Many estate sites require site inductions, permits, high-vis and escorted access. Knowing in advance avoids a wasted trip for both of us.

How collection works

1

Tell us what you have.

Call 0411 398 285 or submit an enquiry with the material types, approximate tonnage and the Wetherill Park site address.

2

We confirm the collection.

We check access, vehicle requirements, dock scheduling and induction needs, and confirm whether the load qualifies at 3 tonnes or falls under the under-minimum fee.

3

We collect.

Our team attends with the appropriate vehicle and lifting equipment, loads the material and leaves the site clear.

4

Weighing, grading and instant payment.

The load is weighed and graded, you receive an itemised transaction record, and funds are transferred to your account on settlement.

Responsible recycling and compliance

Copper Recycle Sydney operates as a registered scrap metal business under the NSW Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016. In practice that means three things for anyone selling to us in Wetherill Park: payment is made by bank transfer rather than cash, we record the details of each transaction and the person or business selling the material, and photo identification is required at the point of sale. These requirements apply to every registered dealer in NSW and exist to keep stolen metal out of the recycling chain — a real concern in an estate carrying this much cable and infrastructure.

Instant payment and compliance are not in tension. Funds move on settlement the moment your load is weighed and graded; what you get in addition is a documented transaction at both ends, which matters if your business has its own reporting, make-good or audit requirements to satisfy.

Material collected from Wetherill Park is sorted, graded and processed for re-entry into manufacturing supply chains. Copper in particular can be recycled indefinitely without loss of performance, and recovering it uses a fraction of the energy needed to produce primary copper from ore — which is why cable offcuts from a Horsley Drive switchboard refit carry genuine downstream value rather than being landfill diverted for appearance’s sake.

Frequently asked questions — scrap metal recycling in Wetherill Park

Do you collect scrap metal in Wetherill Park?
Yes. Copper Recycle Sydney collects bulk scrap metal and copper throughout Wetherill Park, NSW 2164, including the Smithfield–Wetherill Park industrial estate along The Horsley Drive, Victoria Street, Polding Street and Cowpasture Road. Collections run Monday to Saturday, 6am to 6pm. Call 0411 398 285 to arrange a time.
How quickly can you collect from Wetherill Park?
Usually within a day or two of confirming details. Our facility is in South Granville, about 15 kilometres away, so Wetherill Park collections are scheduled directly rather than batched into a regional run. If you are working to a make-good deadline, a shutdown window or a lease handover, say so when you call.
What is the minimum load size for collection?
3 tonnes and above per load, across copper, general scrap metal and solar panels. In an industrial estate of this scale the threshold is usually reached by a single job — one racking removal, plant decommissioning or production clear-out will often clear it on its own.
What happens if my load is under 3 tonnes?
We can collect it for a fee rather than paying you for the material, and the fee is quoted before we attend. If you are close to the threshold, consolidating across a couple of jobs, or coordinating with a neighbouring tenancy in the same estate, is usually worth doing — it is the difference between paying a fee and receiving a payment.
How do you pay, and how fast?
By instant bank transfer, on settlement. Once your load is weighed and graded, funds go to your account — no payment terms, no waiting period, no cheque. You also receive an itemised breakdown showing what each grade contributed to the figure.
Do you pay cash for scrap metal?
No. Section 12 of the NSW Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016 prohibits registered scrap metal dealers from paying for scrap metal with cash, with a cheque payable to cash, or in kind with goods or services, and section 12A prohibits advertising that they will. Instant bank transfer is the compliant equivalent, arrives just as quickly, and leaves both parties with a record of the transaction.
Do you buy individual items, like a single battery or catalytic converter?
No. We do not purchase small lots or individual items. Catalytic converters, batteries, car engines and electric motors are accepted as part of a qualifying bulk load of 3 tonnes or more, assessed within the load rather than bought separately.
What types of metal do you collect in Wetherill Park?
Copper in all grades — bare bright, #1, #2, insulated cable, wire, pipe and busbar — is our lead material. We also collect brass, stainless steel in 304 and 316 grades, aluminium in extrusion, sheet and cast form, air conditioning units, electric motors, ferrous and structural steel, and solar panels. Mixed loads are assessed and graded on arrival.
Can you work around our loading dock schedule and site induction?
Yes, and it is worth telling us about both when you book. Many of the larger facilities on The Horsley Drive and Victoria Street require dock bookings, site inductions, permits or escorted access. We would rather arrange that properly in advance than arrive and be held at the gate while your dock slot passes.
Do you handle tenancy strip-outs and make-good obligations?
Yes, and they are among the better-suited collections in this estate. A warehouse make-good typically produces racking, mezzanine steel, cabling, services and fitout metal well in excess of 3 tonnes. For a staged strip-out we can schedule several collections against the program rather than treating each removal as a separate booking.
Do you provide bins for ongoing collection?
Yes, for sites generating continuous volume — which in this estate is common. Manufacturers, fabricators and workshops with regular copper or metal turnover can arrange bin placement and a scheduled collection cycle rather than booking each pickup individually. See our free bins page or call to discuss volume.
Can you handle multiple sites under one arrangement?
Yes. Property managers and facilities teams running several tenancies across the estate can consolidate collections under a single arrangement, with one point of contact and consistent documentation across sites — usually simpler for reporting than dealing with a different operator per address.
What identification or paperwork do I need?
Photo identification is required when selling scrap metal in NSW, and we record the transaction along with the seller’s details. For company sites this is usually handled through the business details and an authorised contact. Bring photo ID to the collection and the process takes a minute.
How is the value of my load calculated?
By weight and by grade. Each material is weighed and graded separately and current market rates are applied — scrap prices move daily with global commodity markets and the exchange rate, so rates are quoted at the time of collection rather than fixed in advance. You receive an itemised breakdown showing what each grade contributed, so the settlement figure is traceable.
Do you collect from residential properties in Wetherill Park?
Only where the 3-tonne minimum is met, which household quantities rarely reach. Wetherill Park is predominantly industrial, so most enquiries here are commercial in any case. If you are a resident with a smaller quantity, we can collect for a fee, or a local drop-off facility may serve you better — call and we will tell you straight which option makes sense.
Do you recycle solar panels from Wetherill Park sites?
Yes, in bulk. Solar panels are classified as e-waste in NSW rather than standard scrap metal, which means separate handling, storage and transport obligations. The estate’s warehouse rooftops carry a large installed base of commercial solar and the earliest arrays are now being decommissioned. We collect at 3 tonnes and above.
Are you a licensed scrap metal dealer?
Yes. Copper Recycle Sydney operates as a registered scrap metal business under the NSW Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016, administered by the NSW Police Force. Registration involves criminal record and background checks and must be renewed periodically. Our ABN is 82 419 348 954.
