About Wollongong and the Port Kembla industrial precinct

Wollongong sits on the Illawarra coastal strip between the Illawarra Escarpment and the Tasman Sea, roughly 85 kilometres south of Sydney and just over an hour’s drive down the M1 Princes Motorway. It is NSW’s third-largest city and the state’s most concentrated heavy industrial centre outside Newcastle, anchored by the Port Kembla Steelworks and the working harbour beside it.

BlueScope’s Port Kembla site covers around 760 hectares within a broader 1,200-hectare port precinct about five kilometres south of the Wollongong CBD, spanning Port Kembla, Cringila and Warrawong. The operation employs roughly 3,000 people directly and supports around 10,000 jobs across the Illawarra through contractors, suppliers and service providers — which is the part that matters for a recycler, because it is that contractor and supplier layer that generates recoverable metal rather than the steelworks itself.

The precinct is also in the middle of significant change. In late 2025 the NSW Government finalised the rezoning of 200 hectares of BlueScope’s non-operational land along Five Islands Road to a Special Purpose zone, creating the Port Kembla Land Transformation Precinct — a project planning authorities describe as one of the largest land transitions in the world, with potential to support tens of thousands of jobs in advanced manufacturing, clean energy, education and logistics. Separately, BlueScope’s No.5 Blast Furnace is expected to reach the end of its life between 2026 and 2030, with the relining of No.6 Blast Furnace critical to continued steelmaking in the region. Projects of that scale mean sustained decommissioning, demolition and refit activity — and sustained volumes of recoverable metal — across the precinct for years.

Beyond the port, the Illawarra’s commercial and light industrial activity runs through Unanderra, Kembla Grange and Dapto to the south, the northern suburbs strip from Fairy Meadow through Corrimal to Bulli, and the University of Wollongong and Innovation Campus. Shellharbour and Albion Park sit further south, with Kiama beyond them.

How to prepare a load for collection

  • Separate copper grades where practical. Bare bright kept apart from insulated cable and #2 copper grades more favourably than the same metal presented mixed.
  • Keep contamination out. Timber, plastic, concrete and general waste reduce assessed weight and slow the collection.
  • Consolidate and stage the load. One accessible area with truck clearance beats material spread across a site. On port precinct sites this usually means coordinating with the hardstand or laydown area.
  • Flag hazards early. Refrigerant-charged units, batteries, residual fluids and anything requiring specific handling should be identified before we attend.
  • Tell us about site induction requirements. Larger Illawarra industrial sites often require inductions, permits or escorted access. Knowing in advance avoids a wasted trip for both of us.

What is the minimum load size for a Wollongong collection?

What happens if my load is under 3 tonnes?
We can collect it for a fee rather than paying you for the material, and the fee is quoted before we attend. If you are close to the threshold, consolidating across a couple of jobs or coordinating with another contractor on the same site is usually worth doing.

By weight and grade. Each material is weighed and graded separately at current market rates, with an itemised breakdown on your record. Scrap prices move daily with global commodity markets, so rates are quoted at collection rather than fixed in advance.
Do you collect from Wollongong households?
