Marrickville is not a heavy industrial suburb and it is not a warehouse estate. It is something more unusual — one of the last substantial light industrial precincts left in inner Sydney, sitting inside a residential suburb seven kilometres from the CBD. That produces a specific and quite distinctive set of metal sources.
Warehouse and industrial strip-outs. Marrickville’s industrial land has been under sustained conversion pressure for years, with a continuing planning debate about how much of it should be retained for employment use. Whichever way individual sites go, the practical effect is a steady stream of warehouse strip-outs, change-of-use fitouts and demolition — producing structural steel, roof sheeting, racking, mezzanines, cabling and services plant.
Breweries and food manufacturing. Marrickville and Sydenham host a notable concentration of independent breweries and food producers. Brewing is a stainless steel industry: fermenters, bright tanks, kegs, pipework, pumps and fittings, most of it 304 or 316. When a brewery upgrades capacity, relocates or closes, the resulting stainless volume is substantial and frequently undervalued because it goes out as general scrap.
Fabricators, workshops and makers. The suburb retains a real population of metal fabricators, joiners, prop and set builders, bicycle and automotive workshops, and small manufacturers. Individually their offcut volume is modest; consolidated across several jobs, or across a few neighbouring businesses, it clears 3 tonnes.
Commercial fitouts. Warehouse conversions to studios, gyms, offices, hospitality and retail churn regularly, and each changeover strips out partition steel, ceiling grid, cabling, ducting and shopfitting.
Trades working across the inner west. Electricians and plumbers working the area’s dense terrace and warehouse housing stock accumulate copper pipe, cable and brass fittings continuously. Consolidating across jobs is how trades here reach a qualifying load.
This deserves its own section because it is where inner west collections go wrong, and because almost nobody discusses it before turning up.
Marrickville streets are narrow, frequently one-way, and lined with resident parking. Many industrial and warehouse frontages open directly onto the footpath with no hardstand, no setback and nowhere for a truck to stand without blocking a lane. Heritage warehouse buildings often have low door heads and internal columns that rule out forklift access. Shared driveways and rear laneways are common and rarely wide enough to turn in. Loading zones may need a council permit. Residential neighbours sit directly adjacent to industrial sites, which makes early-morning noise a real consideration.
None of that makes a collection impossible — we work in the inner west regularly. It does mean we need the details before we commit a vehicle. Before booking, tell us:
With that information we send a vehicle that actually fits the street. Without it, the most likely outcome is a truck that cannot load and a wasted morning for both of us.

Copper is our lead material. In Marrickville it comes mainly from building and fitout work: copper pipe and fittings from plumbing in the area’s older terrace and warehouse stock, cabling from rewires, warehouse conversions and commercial fitouts, switchboard upgrades, and motor windings from decommissioned plant. Breweries and food producers add pipework and fittings when systems are replaced.
We handle bare bright, #1 and #2 copper, insulated cable, copper wire, pipe and fittings, and busbar. Grading is done at our facility and itemised on your transaction record, so the settlement figure traces back to what each grade contributed. On a warehouse strip-out, keeping cable separate from the general demolition stream is the highest-return decision available — insulated cable is priced on recoverable copper content, and mixed in with plasterboard and timber it grades badly.
See our copper scrap and copper wire scrap pages for grading detail.
Worth treating separately, because Marrickville produces more of it than most suburbs its size. Brewing and food manufacturing run on 304 and 316 stainless: fermenters and bright tanks, kegs, mash tuns, pipework and manifolds, pumps, valves, benching and fittings. Commercial kitchens across the suburb’s hospitality strip add more.
Stainless grades well and is worth identifying properly rather than letting it go out as mixed ferrous. If you are decommissioning brewing or food production plant, tell us what grades you believe you have and we will assess it specifically. Tanks and vessels may need to be certified empty, clean and degassed before collection — flag that when you call.
Alongside copper and stainless we recycle bulk ferrous and non-ferrous scrap from Marrickville commercial, light industrial and construction sites. This is a bulk-only service — we do not purchase small lots or individual items, and loads are assessed as a whole.
Typical Marrickville collections include structural steel and roof sheeting from warehouse demolition and conversion, racking and mezzanine steel, steel stud framing and ceiling grid from fitouts, shopfitting and display steel, aluminium from window, door and facade systems, brass fittings from plumbing, air conditioning units, electric motors and pumps, and mixed metal from site clean-outs.
Bulk solar panel recycling is an additional service for installers and commercial property owners. Solar panels are classified as e-waste in NSW rather than standard scrap metal, bringing separate handling, storage and transport obligations. We collect at 3 tonnes and above, which in practice means installer stock turnover or a commercial warehouse array rather than a single residential system. See the solar panel recycling page.

Marrickville sits on Gadigal and Wangal Country about seven kilometres south-west of the Sydney CBD, in the Inner West Council area. It has an unusual industrial history for a suburb this close to the city: brickworks, clothing and textile manufacturing, food production and light engineering established here through the twentieth century, much of it in the flat land along the Cooks River and around what is now the Sydenham industrial area.
That industrial fabric is why the suburb looks the way it does — sawtooth-roofed factories and brick warehouses interleaved with terrace streets — and it is the subject of a live planning question. The Inner West Council’s employment lands work and a succession of planning proposals have made Marrickville’s remaining industrial land one of the more contested pieces of zoning in Sydney, with residents, businesses and developers all engaged in whether it stays industrial or converts. For a recycler the relevance is straightforward: contested or not, the churn produces metal.
Alongside the remaining industry, the suburb has become known for its independent breweries, food producers, music venues and creative businesses, many of them occupying converted warehouse space. Marrickville Metro anchors retail on Smidmore Street. Sydenham, immediately south, is a rail interchange and the focus of the surrounding industrial precinct. The WestConnex M8 passes through the area with interchange access nearby, which is one of the few genuinely helpful things about getting a truck in and out.
Surrounding suburbs include Sydenham and Tempe to the south, St Peters to the south-east, Enmore and Newtown to the north-east, Petersham and Lewisham to the north, and Dulwich Hill to the west. Alexandria and Mascot — both substantially industrial — sit a short distance east and south-east.

Catalytic converters, batteries, car engines and electric motors are accepted as part of a qualifying bulk load rather than purchased as individual items.
Call 0411 398 285 or submit an enquiry with material types, approximate tonnage, the Marrickville address and the street access details listed above.
We work out the right vehicle for the street, confirm the load qualifies at 3 tonnes, and arrange timing around parking restrictions and any noise-sensitive hours.
Our team attends with appropriate equipment, loads the material and leaves the site clear.
The load is weighed and graded, you receive an itemised transaction record, and funds are transferred to your account on settlement.
We collect throughout Marrickville, Sydenham, Tempe, St Peters, Dulwich Hill, Petersham, Lewisham, Stanmore, Enmore, Newtown, Camperdown, Alexandria, Rosebery and Mascot. Nearby areas with their own pages include Burwood to the west and Surry Hills to the north-east, with Bankstown and Taren Point further out. The full list is on our service areas page.
If you are a trade or workshop with volume across several inner west addresses, that is exactly the situation where one scheduled collection beats several small ones — call and we will work out how to consolidate it.
Copper Recycle Sydney operates as a registered scrap metal business under the NSW Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016. For anyone selling to us in Marrickville that means payment is made by bank transfer rather than cash, we record each transaction along with the seller’s details, and photo identification is required at the point of sale. These obligations apply to every registered dealer in NSW and exist to keep stolen metal out of the recycling chain.
For conversion and demolition projects the documentation side often matters as much as the payment. Development consents in the Inner West commonly carry waste management and resource recovery conditions, and a recorded transaction with an itemised grade breakdown plus an electronic payment trail is generally what those conditions ask for. Instant bank transfer gives you immediate settlement with the paperwork intact.
Material collected from Marrickville is sorted, graded and processed back into manufacturing supply chains. Copper can be recycled indefinitely without loss of performance, and stainless steel from a decommissioned brewery returns to the stainless supply chain rather than being downgraded as mixed scrap — which is a large part of why identifying it properly is worth the effort.
If you have 3 tonnes or more of copper, stainless, scrap metal or solar panels at a Marrickville or inner west site, call 0411 398 285 or send us the details. Include the material types, rough tonnage, the address and — importantly here — how a truck would reach the material.
