Value driver: nickel content. A quick magnet test helps grade it – non-magnetic (300-series) stainless pays more than magnetic (400-series).
How Stainless Steel Scrap Pricing Works
Stainless steel is priced mainly on its nickel content. The 300-series grades (304 and 316) contain nickel, are non-magnetic, and pay the most – with 316 the highest because it also contains molybdenum.
The 400-series grades (like 430) are magnetic, contain little nickel, and pay less. A simple magnet test tells the two families apart: if a magnet sticks strongly, it is usually lower-grade.
