We are based in South Granville in Sydney, about 280 kilometres and three hours from Canberra by road. We are not a Canberra yard and we do not claim to be one. What we do is run scheduled collections into the ACT and the Southern Tablelands for loads that justify the trip.
The 3-tonne minimum and the distance point the same way: this service is built for commercial, government and industrial volume. A departmental office fitout stripping out cabling and plant, a contractor decommissioning mechanical services in a Civic building, a Fyshwick workshop clearing production offcuts, an installer removing a commercial solar array — those loads work. A ute tray of household metal does not, and it is better for everyone if this page says so rather than your phone call being the place you find out.
Copper is our lead material, and Canberra generates it from a distinctive mix of sources. The Territory’s economy is heavily weighted towards government, education, defence and professional services, which means comparatively little heavy manufacturing but a great deal of commercial building stock — and commercial buildings are full of copper. Office refits strip out power and data cabling by the reel. Mechanical services upgrades yield copper pipe, busbar and motor windings. Data centre and communications infrastructure work produces cable offcuts continuously.
We handle bare bright, #1 and #2 copper, insulated cable, copper wire in industrial reels and offcuts, pipe and fittings, and busbar from switchboard and plant room work. Grading happens at our facility and is itemised on your transaction record.
Alongside copper we recycle bulk ferrous and non-ferrous scrap from Canberra commercial and industrial sites. This is a bulk-only service — we do not purchase small lots or individual items, and loads are assessed as a whole.
Bulk solar panel recycling is an additional service for installers, commercial property owners and decommissioning projects across Canberra. The ACT has one of the highest rates of rooftop solar uptake in the country, and the earliest commercial installations are now reaching end of life — which is producing a steady stream of decommissioned panels that need somewhere compliant to go. We collect at 3 tonnes and above. See the solar panel recycling page, or call to discuss a decommissioning program.
Canberra is a planned city of roughly 470,000 people, and its industrial land is deliberately concentrated into a handful of designated areas rather than scattered through the suburbs. For a recycler, that concentration is useful: most recoverable metal in the Territory comes from three or four postcodes.
Fyshwick, south-east of the city centre, is the ACT’s largest and best-known industrial and commercial area — trade suppliers, workshops, warehousing, light manufacturing and a dense concentration of building and automotive trades. Mitchell, in the city’s north near Gungahlin, holds warehousing, light industrial units and trade businesses.
Hume, at the Territory’s southern edge near the NSW border, is the ACT’s heavy industrial area and the location of much of its waste, recycling and materials handling infrastructure. Symonston and Beard add further industrial and service land, with Beard sitting close to the Queanbeyan boundary.
Beyond the industrial areas, the Territory’s recoverable metal comes largely from its building stock: Commonwealth and ACT government office accommodation cycling through refits, the Australian National University and University of Canberra campuses, the defence estate, Canberra Airport and its surrounding business park, and the sustained residential and mixed-use construction through Gungahlin, Molonglo and the inner north. Just across the border, Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra and Googong form a contiguous urban area with the ACT — and, usefully, sit in NSW.
Catalytic converters, batteries, car engines and electric motors are accepted as part of a qualifying bulk load rather than purchased as individual items.
| Material | Typical Canberra sources |
|---|---|
| Copper — bare bright, #1, #2, insulated | Office fitout strip-outs, switchboard and plant room works, commercial plumbing |
| Copper wire and cable | Power and data cabling from government and commercial refits, comms infrastructure offcuts |
| Brass | Hydraulic services fittings, valves, taps, mechanical hardware |
| Stainless steel — 304 and 316 | Commercial kitchen strip-outs, fabrication offcuts, laboratory and institutional fitouts |
| Aluminium — extrusion, sheet, cast | Facade and window fabrication, signage, transport equipment |
| Air conditioning units | Ducted and split systems from commercial mechanical services upgrades |
| Electric motors | Pumps, air handling plant, decommissioned building services equipment |
| Ferrous scrap and structural steel | Demolition, racking removal, construction site clean-outs |
| Solar panels | Commercial array decommissioning, installer stock turnover |
Our ACT runs cover Fyshwick, Mitchell, Hume, Symonston, Beard, Civic and the wider Territory, along with Queanbeyan, Jerrabomberra, Googong and Bungendore just across the NSW border. Where volume justifies it we combine ACT collections with sites along the Hume Highway corridor, including Goulburn, which sits roughly halfway between Canberra and Sydney and often shares a run. The full list is on our service areas page.
Scrap metal is regulated separately in each Australian state and territory, and NSW and the ACT are not the same. NSW operates a dedicated regime under the Scrap Metal Industry Act 2016, administered by the NSW Police Force, which requires dealer registration, mandatory transaction records, seller identification and payment by means other than cash. The ACT does not have an equivalent dedicated scrap metal act; second-hand dealing is licensed by Access Canberra under the Traders (Licensing) Act 2016, and the Territory’s scrap metal requirements are looser than the NSW regime.
Our position on that gap is straightforward. Our facility and our processing are in NSW, and we apply NSW-standard practice to every collection we make: photo identification, a recorded transaction, and electronic payment. Material collected in the ACT is sorted, graded and processed back into manufacturing supply chains.
If you have 3 tonnes or more of copper, scrap metal or solar panels at a Canberra or ACT site, call 0411 398 285 or send us the details. Tell us the material types, rough tonnage and the site address, and we will confirm scheduling and what to expect on settlement.
